If you live in the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation picks up furniture, mattresses, TVs and other bulky items at the curb with no charge per pickup. Book it at least one business day before your regular trash day. Paint, chemicals and construction debris are not part of that pickup. A paid hauler makes sense when the items are still inside, the load is mixed, or you can't wait for trash day.

Not in the trash. LA Sanitation says anything with a plug or a battery should never go in the trash or recycling bin, and California treats TVs and monitors as hazardous waste once they are thrown out. City of Los Angeles residents can book a free curbside pickup for a TV or drop electronics at a S.A.F.E. Center; the four counties we serve all run free e-waste programs. When the TV is part of a bigger cleanout, tell us the screen type and size and we'll confirm it can ride along.

Paint, solvents, motor oil, fuel, propane tanks, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, asbestos, ammunition and medical waste. No junk hauler can legally put those in a load, and they are the items that turn up most in garages and sheds. Each one has a free, legal drop-off route for residents of the four counties we serve, listed below. Everything else in the pile goes with us as usual.

We sort it. Usable furniture, housewares and clothing go to donation when a receiving organization will take them. Metal and appliances go to scrap recycling, paper and cardboard get recycled, and mattresses and electronics go to facilities that accept them. Only what is left over goes to the transfer station. The landfill, transfer station and recycling fees are inside the price you approve, and we will not promise that every item gets a second life, because that depends on its condition and on who accepts it.

Four organizations still send a free truck in Los Angeles County: St. Vincent de Paul, Out of the Closet, The Salvation Army (by ZIP code) and ACTS Thrift in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. The Habitat for Humanity ReStores charge a pickup fee, and none of the three Goodwills in our area sends its own free truck. Every one of them screens condition at the door, most refuse mattresses and sleeper sofas, and several need a week or more of notice. When it is one piece, it is upstairs, it is stained, or it has to be gone this week, a hauler is the realistic option.
