Which Southern California Cities Offer Free Bulky Item Pickup?

Most cities in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties will collect a couch, a mattress or an old appliance from the curb for residents on their trash service, usually by appointment and usually at no charge beyond the trash bill. Who runs it, who qualifies and how to book differ city by city, and each program runs on its own schedule. The table below covers the thirty-one cities we have checked against the official pages; the section after it covers the cases where the free pickup does not fit.

Which Cities Pick Up Bulky Items, And Who Do You Call?

Each row paraphrases the city's or hauler's own page, checked in October 2026. Item limits, counts and fees are left out on purpose because they change; the official link has the current rules.

Why Do The Rules Change From One City To The Next?

Because the trash hauler changes. Some cities collect their own trash (Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Torrance, Ontario, Riverside); others franchise it to Burrtec, Republic Services, Athens, CR&R, Valley Vista, Advance Disposal or WM, and the bulky pickup comes with that contract. The same company can run it differently in two neighboring cities. What stays the same almost everywhere: you have to be on that city's trash service, and the items go outside, to the curb, the parkway or an agreed spot, on the day they give you.

Does Free Bulky Pickup Cover Apartments?

Sometimes. Several programs are written for single-family homes or for homes with the city's own carts (El Monte, Colton, Victorville, Santa Ana as the pages describe them). Garden Grove's is for single-family homes only, and Glendale's stops at buildings of four units. Others say apartment and condo residents go through their property manager (Ontario, Rialto, Glendale, and Santa Clarita when the complex pays the trash bill) or through the building's private hauler (Pasadena), while Whittier's and Alhambra's cover multi-family homes too. The City of Los Angeles runs a separate on-call bulky pickup for buildings of five or more units, paid through a fee on the DWP bill. If you rent in a larger building, ask the manager who the hauler is before you drag anything downstairs.

What Won't The City Pickup Take?

Hazardous material, everywhere: paint, solvents, motor oil, propane, pesticides, batteries. Construction debris such as concrete, brick and dirt is excluded by the programs that list exclusions. Weight is the other limit: Moreno Valley's pickup skips anything one person can't safely lift, and Torrance and Lancaster exclude pianos, spas and anything that needs more than two people. Torrance also refuses wall-to-wall carpet. Some pages say crews do not enter homes (Anaheim) or collect nothing from private property (Torrance, Glendale), and that nothing should be set out before the appointment is confirmed (Victorville). Burbank and Torrance are candid that most of what the bulky truck collects goes to the landfill, which is why both ask residents to donate or sell first. For the hazardous items and their free routes, see what junk removal can't take.

When Does The Free Pickup Not Fit, And What Then?

When the items are still inside or upstairs, when you are in a building the program does not cover, when the pile mixes furniture with renovation debris, or when the next appointment is after your move-out date. That is a hauler's job: we carry from wherever it sits, take the mixed load in one trip, and confirm the price before anything is loaded. Text a photo and your city to (442) 414-3483. If your city's free pickup will do the job, we will say so.

City-by-city detail, including each city's hazardous-waste drop-off, is on our city guides: Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, San Bernardino, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Hesperia, Riverside, Corona, Moreno Valley, Glendale, Burbank, Torrance, Santa Clarita, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Huntington Beach and Garden Grove.

Pickup Questions

Is bulky item pickup free everywhere in Los Angeles County?

Not for everything, and not for everyone. The City of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Torrance and the rest each run their own program with their own hauler and their own eligibility, and Burbank bills appliance and mattress pickups to the utility account. Cities not in the table have programs too; ask your trash hauler, whose name is on your bill.

Do I have to be home for a city bulky pickup?

The programs collect from the curb or parkway on the scheduled day, so the items have to be outside, but the pages do not require you to be present. Anaheim's page notes that crews do not enter homes.

Can I put the items out early?

Only once the appointment is confirmed, and only as early as the program allows. Victorville asks residents not to set anything out before they have an appointment; Burbank says no earlier than the night before, Santa Clarita no earlier than 7 p.m. the evening before, and Torrance no earlier than 12 hours ahead. Riverside says curbside, not in the street. Unscheduled items on the curb can count as illegal dumping.

What if my city isn't in the table?

Look at your trash bill: the hauler named there runs the bulky pickup for your address. We serve 259 cities across the four counties; the table lists only the programs we have verified page by page so far.
