Which Charities Pick Up Furniture Donations For Free In Los Angeles?
As of October 2026, from each organization's own donation page:
| Organization | Home pickup | Mattresses | What they say |
|---|---|---|---|
| St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles | Free truck; call 1-800-974-3571 | Yes, including memory foam and pillow top | Serves Los Angeles County and two coastal counties to the north. Refuses stained, soiled, ripped or broken items, mattress toppers, console TVs and dining sets with fewer than four chairs. |
| Out of the Closet (AIDS Healthcare Foundation) | Free; online form, booked one week ahead (slots open Mondays 7:30 a.m.) | No | Minimum two large furniture items or ten large bags or boxes. Refuses mattresses, headboards, bed frames, built-in appliances, large executive desks, china cabinets, and TVs or appliances over three years old. |
| The Salvation Army | Free; enter your ZIP at satruck.org | Listed as accepted; varies by location | Takes unbroken, gently used furniture and working appliances that are not built in. No gas appliances, no TVs older than five years. Each local center sets its own rules. |
| ACTS Thrift Store, Pasadena | Free throughout Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley | No | No fees or minimums; drivers bring dollies and can disassemble large pieces. Won't take mattresses, box springs, broken furniture or large appliances. |
| Habitat for Humanity Greater LA ReStore | Pickup fee (its donate page and its FAQ page quote different amounts, so confirm when booking); drop-off is free | No | Items must be on a ground floor, in a garage or at the curb. Appliances under eight years and uninstalled; no entertainment centers, non-matching dining chairs or desks over five feet. |
| San Gabriel Valley Habitat ReStore, Pasadena | Pickup fee, booked about two weeks out, photos required | No | Ground level or one flight of stairs at most. Its guidelines are also published in Spanish. |
| Goodwill Southern California | No pickup of its own; refers you to ReSupply, a paid service | No, and no sofa-bed mattresses | Drop-off at its donation centers. Takes furniture, TVs and e-waste; refuses major appliances. |
| Goodwill of Orange County | Fee-based ReSupply pickup | Only at its Santa Ana campus | Furniture at store locations and the Mission Viejo warehouse. |
| Habitat Riverside ReStore | By appointment; call to ask | No | Refuses used upholstered furniture, pressboard cabinets, pianos and exercise equipment. |
| Pickup Please | Free, but small items only | No | Shows up in map results as “Free Donation Pickup”; it is a for-profit service that takes only what one person can carry. No couches, mattresses, large appliances or TVs. |
Programs change their rules and fees; the links go to each organization's current page.
Does Goodwill Pick Up Furniture In Los Angeles?
Not with its own trucks. Goodwill Southern California's donation page says plainly that it does not offer a pickup service, and its FAQ points donors to ReSupply, where items are picked up for a fee and delivered to a Goodwill donation center. Goodwill of Orange County uses the same fee-based service. Dropping off at a Goodwill center is free, and Goodwill Southern California lists furniture, flat-screen TVs and e-waste among what it accepts; mattresses, sofa-bed mattresses and major appliances are on its refusal list.
Will The Salvation Army Pick Up A Couch?
Usually, if it is in good shape. The Salvation Army's pickup site describes a free furniture pickup scheduled by ZIP code, and its guidelines ask for unbroken, gently used furniture; sofas, beds, desks and cabinets are on the accepted list. Each local center sets its own rules, so what one neighborhood accepts another may not, and the ZIP form is the only way to know. Anything stained, ripped or broken will be refused at the door.
Can You Donate A Mattress In Los Angeles?
Only in a few places. St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles accepts mattresses and box springs, including memory foam and pillow top, in clean condition. The Salvation Army lists mattresses as accepted nationally, subject to local rules. Goodwill of Orange County takes them only at its Santa Ana campus. Everyone else in the table above refuses them: the Habitat ReStores, Out of the Closet, ACTS, Goodwill Southern California and Pickup Please.
If a mattress is not donatable, you still have free routes. In the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation's curbside bulky item pickup takes mattresses and box springs at no extra charge, and California's Bye Bye Mattress program lists drop-off sites statewide. Details, including the retailer take-back rule, are on our mattress removal page.
What Furniture Will Charities Not Take?
The refusal lists are more alike than different. Across the programs above: anything stained, torn, water-damaged, broken or missing parts; pet hair and smoke odor; mattresses and box springs almost everywhere; sleeper sofas at several; large entertainment centers and china cabinets; non-matching dining chairs and incomplete sets; office desks over five feet and cubicles; pressboard cabinets at the Habitat ReStores in Pasadena and Riverside; appliances older than five to eight years, or not working, or built in; TVs older than three to eight years depending on the program; cribs, car seats and strollers; and used carpet or rugs.
Several pages add that acceptance is at the driver's discretion. In practice that means the decision happens on your doorstep, after you waited for the appointment.
How Far Ahead Do You Have To Book, And Where Do The Items Have To Be?
Out of the Closet opens its appointment slots every Monday for the following week only. The San Gabriel Valley ReStore schedules roughly two weeks out and asks for photos first. Habitat LA wants items on a ground floor, in a garage or at the curb; the Pasadena ReStore's crew will not climb more than one flight. St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army book by phone or ZIP form, and the truck comes on their route day, not yours.
When Will They Refuse It, And What Is The Realistic Option?
A free truck is the right first call when the piece is clean, complete, on the ground floor, and you can wait for the route. It stops being realistic when the item is upstairs with no elevator, when it is a mattress or a sleeper sofa, when the sofa has a stain the driver will see, or when the keys go back to the landlord on Friday.
That is the pickup we do. We carry from any floor, we take the mattress and the sleeper mechanism along with the couch, and we still sort for donation and recycling where a receiving organization will accept it, without promising it. Text a photo and your city to (442) 414-3483; you get a ballpark before anyone drives out and the price is confirmed before anything is loaded. If the free truck will take it, we will tell you that too. LA Sanitation gives residents the same advice before a bulky pickup: donate it first if it is still in good shape.
